Law Day Event Supports Homeless Youth

May 5, 2016

In celebration of Law Day USA, the Traverse Area Women Lawyers Association will host a screening of "Holes" at the State Theatre on Sat., May 7, at 10am. "Hole" honors the tradition of Law Day by telling the story of exploited youth forced to work long days digging holes in the desert. The film stars Jon Voight, Sigourney Weaver and Shia LaBeouf.

The event seeks to raise awareness and funds for the Traverse City Area Public Schools' Students in Transition Empowerment Program (STEP) that serves homeless youth and those at risk of homelessness. STEP eliminates barriers that interfere with education. It supports students through tutoring, providing basic hygiene products and transportation.

“On Law Day, we use creative ways to teach children and our community that the law is about fairness,” saysTJ Andrews, president of the Traverse Area Women Lawyers Association. “This year, we are highlighting a vital program that supports young people in our community whose most basic needs are not being met."

The audience is encouraged to donate to STEP and bring school supplies to the event. The first 75 children attending will receive prize bags.
