Leland Township Crash Victims Identified

Aug. 23, 2016

The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office has released the identities of the victims involved in a fatal single-car accident in Leland Towsnhip Saturday morning.

Three occupants of a 2008 Ford pick-up truck were killed in the crash, which occurred at approximately 8am on M-22 between Schomberg Road and Overby Road. The victims included the 26-year-old driver, Brian Surhigh Jr. of Algonac, the 41-year-old front-seat passenger, Lamareo Baldwin of Detroit, and a 35-year-old rear-seat passenger, Larvelle Small of Detroit. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two passengers in the rear of the truck survived the accident and remain hospitalized at Munson Medical Center. Authorities have not yet released their names, but indicated the victims were both from Detroit and were 26 and 23 years old.

Authorities say the Ford was traveling north on M-22 when the driver lost control of the vehicle rounding a curve. The truck swerved, left the roadway and struck a tree. While the investigation into the accident remains ongoing, authorities believe speed was "the primary factor" in the crash.
