Local Film And New Media Program Lands Statewide Acclaim

Jan. 16, 2019

The Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District (TBAISD) Career-Tech Center will receive the 2019 Excellence in Practice Award from the Michigan Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education. Each year, the award is given to one state-approved career and technical education program that “demonstrates outstanding outcomes, produces measurable results, and leads to documented success in employment or postsecondary education/training.”

For 2019, the award will go to the TBAISD Career-Tech Center Film & New Media Program. The two-year program gives students an introduction to various aspects of film and video production, including pre-production, production, post-production, film history and theory, computer graphic technology, and use of professional audio and video equipment. The program also integrates language arts curriculum to hone students’ writing and storytelling abilities.

The award for the Film & New Media Program marks the fifth time the TBAISD Career-Tech Center has received the Excellence in Practice Award. Previously, the Career-Tech Center has been recognized for the TBA Early College program (2016), the Manufacturing Technology Academy (2015), and the Teacher Academy (2013), as well as for early efforts to integrate academic learning and Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements across its career and technical programs (2011).

Representatives from the Career-Tech Center will accept the 2019 Excellence in Practice Award on January 28 at an event in Grand Rapids.
