Local Radio Station Temporarily Off The Air Due To Ice Storms

By Craig Manning | March 31, 2025

Listeners of 106 KHQ, a long-running pop music radio station in northern Michigan, should expect radio silence for at least a day or two. The station reported on Facebook this morning that its communications tower – “all 600 feet of it” – had come tumbling down on Sunday night due to ice storms in Petoskey, where the tower is located.

“We are working to figure out how we can get back on the air as soon as possible,” KHQ shared. “This storm is being described as apocalyptic - would you agree?”

The “apocalyptic” storm clobbered much of Michigan on Sunday, prompting Governor Gretchen Whitmer to declare a state of emergency in 10 counties. That state of emergency includes Emmet County, where Petoskey is located, as well as Alpena, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Mackinac, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, and Presque Isle.

Consistent rain since Friday, followed by plummeting temperatures and heavy winds later in the weekend, led to dangerous conditions for many Michiganders on Sunday. Buildup of ice on trees and power lines caused widespread power outages, while winds knocked down everything from gas station canopies to school roofs.

Traverse City itself avoided the worst of the storm, but many other parts of the state weren't so lucky. Some sources have claimed that as many as 180,000 households in the Lower Peninsula lost power because of the storms.

So far, five fatalities have been attributed to the storm, according to ABC News.

KHQ, which broadcasts at 105.9 MHz on the FM radio dial, is off the air until further notice because of the fallen tower. However, the radio station’s DJs have been posting periodic updates on Facebook today, as well as advising Petoskey locals – many of whom are still without power – on where to find food, supplies, warm shelter, and other resources.

Per KHQ, no one was hurt as a result of the tower incident, even though the structure hit the radio station’s engineering building on the way down.
