A 27-year-old Traverse City man is facing multiple charges after being stopped for suspected drunk driving and assaulting the arresting police officer.
According to the Traverse City Police Department, the officer was on routine patrol on East Eighth Street near Wellington Street Thursday night when he saw a white Ford cargo van fail to signal a turn and drive through multiple stop signs. The officer pulled over the driver, who refused to comply with the officer's commands. The driver had "strong signs of impairment" including smelling of booze and having bloodshot, watery eyes, according to the TCPD.
When the officer instructed the driver to exit his vehicle, the man "became combative, using profane language, attempting to shut the vehicle door on the officer, bit the officer's arm, and struck the officer in the head and face several times," according to the TCPD. A backup officer deployed a K9 to assist, and a Taser was also deployed by the arresting officer. The suspect was taken into custody after "continued resistance," according to the TCPD.
A search of the man's vehicle produced a large fixed-blade knife within reach of the driver's seat. The suspect was taken to Munson Medical Center for a blood draw and medical clearance after sustaining injuries during the arrest. The arresting officer also sought treatment for injuries. The suspect, a 27-year-old Traverse City man, was later lodged at Grand Traverse County Jail. He faces potential charges of assault on a police officer, resisting and obstructing, carrying a concealed weapons violation, and operating while intoxicated.
The case has been turned over to the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor's Office for review.
