Man Taken Into Custody After Police Standoff

By Beth Milligan | July 17, 2018

The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office took a 77-year-old man into protective custody following a standoff with authorities in Suttons Bay Township late Sunday.

The 911 dispatch center received a call from a family member at 10:38pm reporting that the the man was threatening to shoot himself at a residence on South Herman Road. Because Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies were initially all busy responding to other calls, two tribal officers responded to the address, where they found the man inside the home pointing a handgun at his head.

The officers negotiated with the man and removed other family members from the house. At one point, a taser was deployed, but was unsuccessful in subduing the man. During negotiations, the man pointed the handgun at an officer, at which point officers backed out of the residence and waited for additional assistance.

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived and activated the Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Emergency Response Team. Negotiations continued, with nearby residents evacuated from their homes. At 2:13am, the man agreed to come out of his residence. He was taken into custody and transported to Munson Hospital for treatment and evaluation.

A report will be sent to the prosecutor's office for review regarding the case.
