Megan Madion's New Modus Operandi

April 15, 2015

Megan Madion has worked – and worked out – all over the world. Formerly the president and chief operating officer of Hagerty Insurance, she always found time to train and compete as a runner, triathlete, and Nordic skier on the side. Now, the 49-year-old operates her own fitness studio, Modus45, which is preparing an expansion and move into the newly refurbished Warehouse MRKT complex on Hall Street May 1.

In May 2007, Madion placed fourth in the Bayshore Half-Marathon. The next day, she went for a bike ride, but her muscles were tight, and she got into an accident. Recovery took nine months, during which she adopted her daughter, Mae, from Guatemala. Meanwhile, Hagerty was growing globally.

“I was so tired,” Madion says. “I would squeeze my glutes, roll over, and stretch until I could get motivated to really move.” Soon, she had developed a new way of staying in shape: lying on the floor and making micro movements.

In 2011, Madion got married and soon after left Hagerty after nearly two decades with the company. But she had a hard time managing the stay-at-home mom lifestyle. She wanted to feel fulfilled while maintaining the flexibility to pick up Mae from school. Meanwhile, she had continued developing her own workout routine. Enter the "Modus workout."

The first time longtime Madion friend Pam Klumpp tried the Modus workout was on the floor in Madion’s tiny office. Later, Madion asked Klumpp and a small group of friends to make a 12-week commitment to help her test out the workout.

“I knew it would be challenging,” Klumpp says. “But Megan has a great energy about her. You want to hop on her shirttails, because you know she’ll take you on a fun ride.

For about a year, Madion has hosted Modus45 classes from her downtown home – the refurbished former Hibbard’s Funeral Home and National Cherry Festival offices at Sixth and Union streets. The business has added to the roster of classes, clients, and instructors, those certified to teach the Modus method (including Klumpp), which targets the pelvic muscles and lower back. Over time, Madion has also added cardio intervals, primarily punches, to allow participants to “shake it out.”

“In my years competing, I learned how to train efficiently,” Madion says. “You want to work every inch of your body, but still have your normal life and not be too tired or sore.”

Aside from her fitness background, Madion says her days as an insurance executive instilled a sense of professionalism that she has brought to Modus45.

“You want to make sure that when people come in, everything’s clean, and if you screw up, you take responsibility,” Madion says. “If people are injured, have neck issues, or are nervous about their back, we try to make them comfortable.”

Although she’s still busy fine-tuning the details for her new studio in the Warehouse MRKT, Madion already has her eye on the next challenge.

“It’s been like seven years since I’ve skied,” she says. “I’m trying to build a base so I can race next year.”
