Opera House Proposes Marquee

May 5, 2014

The City Opera House (COH) is seeking approval from Traverse City officials to construct a "period-sensitive marquee" over the entrance and sidewalk of the downtown venue. In a statement released this weekend, management said COH "has determined a distinct need to define and demonstrate a presence 'street side' for members and visitors in the community" and that Chicago design firm Greene & Proppe Design, Inc., has provided marquee renderings for the venue that would "enhance the 100 block of Front Street" while being "minimally invasive."

"No taxpayer monies are to be utilized in design, fabrication or installation" of the marquee, according to the statement. "(It) is made possible by a private group of citizens."

The City Opera House is currently seeking "input and affirmation" from the Traverse City commission on the project, as well as the State Historical Preservation Office and the Historic Districts Commission.
