Primary Election Results

By Beth Milligan | Aug. 7, 2024

Michigan voters will choose between Democrat Elissa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers in November for the open U.S. Senate seat vacated by the retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow, with both candidates handily defeating their fellow party challengers in Tuesday’s primary election. Stabenow – who had previously refrained from endorsing a primary candidate – endorsed Slotkin Tuesday, saying she’s “seen firsthand how engaged, accessible, and present (Slotkin) is across her district.”

In other statewide results, Traverse City’s Callie Barr won the Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Michigan’s 1st Congressional District and will face Republican incumbent Jack Bergman. Republican John Roth defeated primary opponent Owen Suhy to take on Democrat Larry Knight this fall in the state’s 104th District. Lisa Trombley secured the Republican nomination in Michigan’s 103rd District and will run against Democratic incumbent Betsy Coffia in November.

On the local level, both the Traverse City Area Public Schools bond and Traverse Area District Library millage proposals passed with comfortable margins. Grant and Blair townships both also passed their ambulance millages. Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea defeated Republican challenger Charlie Jetter, while incumbent Drain Commissioner Andy Smits won over primary opponent Ron Clous. Neither Shea nor Smits will face a Democratic opponent in November, putting them on track for likely wins barring a successful third-party candidate.

Jamie Callahan emerged as the likely new Grand Traverse County Treasurer, defeating Sarah M. Gum in the Republican primary. He faces no Democratic opponents this fall. Barb Lund eked out a razor-thin victory in a four-way Republican county register of deeds race, closely tailed by Scott Rokos and Joseph G. Underwood. Lund’s eligibility for the position, however, was recently called into question since her primary residence is in Leelanau County. She faces a likely legal challenge moving forward. No Democrats are running for register of deeds.

In the only contested Grand Traverse County commission primary races, Kathleen Haueisen defeated fellow Republican Darcie C. Pickren for the right to take on Democratic incumbent T.J. Andrews in District 7, while Pamela Kaiser defeated fellow Democrat Lance Boehmer in District 9 and will face Republican incumbent Penny Morris this fall. In the only two competitive township supervisor races, Republican Maura Sanders defeated Kelly J. Clark in Peninsula Township, while Republican Linda Slopsema won over Ardella M. Benak in Whitewater Township. Neither face Democractic opponents this fall.

The following are key Grand Traverse County races that appeared on the primary ballot, with winning candidates – who will proceed to the November general election – in bold. All results are with 100 percent of precincts reporting as of press time at 2am Wednesday.
