Spanish Ship In Traverse City

El Galeon Andalucia, a 170-foot, 495-ton authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain's West Indies fleet, will be open for tours from 10am to 7pm from Friday, July 22 through Monday, July 25. The ship will be docked at Clinch Park west wall at Duncan L. Clinch Marina. She will set sail for Chicago July 26 as part of the Tall Ships Challenge Great Lakes 2016.
El Galeon tells the story of ships from 500 years ago, the era of Juan Ponce de Leon, including information about 16th century European sailing techniques and technology, as well as showcasing important historical exhibits. Its main deck includes the bowsprit and three masts for the seven sails. The predominant materials are oak and pine, with a coating of fiberglass unique in this type of replica. El Galeon includes current technology to guarantee safety.
The ship has travelled thru the Suez Canal, visited Shanghai, Hong Kong and the Philippines. It crossed the Atlantic in 2013 for a tour of the Caribbean before sailing to the U.S. St. Augustine has been named El Galeon's home American port for the foreseeable future.
El Galeon is in Traverse City through the invitation of the Maritime Heritage Alliance of Traverse City with the support of the City of Traverse City and Clinch Park Marina. Entrance donations are $10 for adults, $5 kids 5-12, under 5 free.
