The Michigan State Police department is launching a new cold case team in northern Michigan. The MSP Seventh District Cold Case Team will operate out of district headquarters in Gaylord within the Special Investigation Section, according to a department release.

"The purpose of this new team is to review, organize, and maintain the MSP Seventh District cold cases and associated property, as well as further the investigations," the release states. The team will be led by Detective Sergeant Matt Wilt and will include two detective troopers yet to be assigned. The team will evaluate MSP cold cases in northern Michigan and determine their solvability based on a metrics system.

"With the advancement of DNA analysis and other investigative techniques, we want to take a fresh look at some of our older cases," the release states. "We want the public and the families to know we have not forgotten about them. There is no statute of limitations for homicide, so if we can further the investigations and get suspects charged, we hope to bring closure to the families of the victim."
