Suspicious Shopping List Prompts Police Search

By Patrick Sullivan | May 22, 2018

A young person who left a shopping list for bomb-making ingredients stuck to a refrigerator at Northwestern Michigan College’s North Hall told police he just has a “dark sense of humor."

Traverse City police were called to the dorm at 6pm Saturday after a student who was checking into the room found the list disturbing enough to call 911, TCPD Chief Jeff O’Brien says.

The call prompted officers to search the suspect’s room with his permission and to go over his social media to determine whether the 18-year-old Ellsworth man poses a threat.

Though O’Brien says investigators determined there is no threat, he says the person who called in the suspicious list absolutely did the right thing.

“It was a good thing to report that,” he says.
