TCPD To Ramp Up Loud Vehicle Enforcement, Bike Patrols

By Beth Milligan | July 2, 2026

The Traverse City Police Department is increasing enforcement efforts targeting "excessively loud vehicles and motorcycles" in the downtown area.

The TCPD said the heightened enforcement efforts against loud vehicles is in response to "community concerns regarding noise disturbances from vehicles. As a reminder to everyone, rapid acceleration causing vehicle tires to squeal, and vehicles causing excessive noise (music, exhaust, etc.) is against city ordinance and state law. Both of these violations will be enforced with up to a $500 fine."

The TCPD also announced it recently trained five officers to be part of its bike unit. Those officers will be assisting in "patrolling trails and difficult-to-reach areas" this summer, according to the department.
