Third Individual Charged After Parking Deck Shooting Investigation

A third individual was charged after an investigation into a fatal shooting at the Larry C. Hardy parking deck.
Austin C. Bucco, 20, was recently arraigned in 86th District Court on charges of lying to a peace officer in a violent crime investigation, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony firearms.
Chief Assistant Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Kyle Attwood tells The Ticker the charges stem from the investigation into the Nov. 15 shooting of Lawrence Boyd IV in the deck. Bucco is an associate of Eugene Thompson, 17, and Hunter Vanderwall, 18, who both face a series of charges connected to the shooting.
Attwood says it’s not clear if Bucco knew about the shooting or alleged breaking and entering activity by Thompson and Vanderwall, but that he was at a hotel visited by the other two defendants around the time of these activities.
“It did not appear (Bucco) was involved other than being a compatriot of these other folks, and when (investigators) executed search warrants for the cell phones of everyone involved and they were analyzing images that were on the phones, (Bucco) was seen in photographs on phones of multiple individuals holding and posing with the murder weapon…about an hour before the homicide,” Attwood tells The Ticker.
Charges were issued based on those photos and subsequent conversations with Bucco.
“Obviously, he's prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior convictions, and the lying piece is pertaining to his statements about having no clue that the gun was there and not seeing it until after the fact,” Attwood says.
Court records show Bucco was convicted in 2024 of carrying a concealed weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon and attempted lying to a police officer.
