Traverse City Airport Considering Purchase Of Nearby Property

Oct. 7, 2014

Cherry Capital Airport officials are eyeing the purchase of the former Charter Communications building on S. Airport Road. Airport Director Kevin Klein says the plan for the parcel is to remove the building and return the site to level ground.

Klein explains that as the Federal Aviation Administration introduces new GPS approaches to the airport, a larger Runway Protection Zone will be required. The building has been on the market for nearly four years, according to Klein, “so we are taking the opportunity to see if we can reach an agreement.”

“A new approach to the south end was put in place last year so as the property that surrounds the protection zone comes up for sale, the FAA would like us to buy it,” says Klein. “We are only looking at property when the owners would like to sell,” not looking to force anyone out or ask anyone to sell.
