Two teenagers were arrested and face multiple charges following a Saturday night robbery and police chase in which one of the suspects shot several rounds at pursuing officers, striking the pant leg of one but not injuring any. The chase in the Munson Avenue/East Front Street area prompted Grand Traverse County Central Dispatch and Northwestern Michigan College to issue shelter-in-place alerts until the suspects were apprehended.
According to the Traverse City Police Department, officers were dispatched at 10:07pm to the 1200 block of East Eighth Street in response to a reported larceny from a car. The suspects were described as wearing hoodies and masks and walking westbound from the area. TCPD officers located two individuals matching that description in a parking lot in the 100 block of Munson Avenue.
As officers made contact, the individuals fled on foot. During the ensuing chase, one of the suspects pulled a firearm and fired several shots at pursuing officers. There were no injuries as a result of the shooting; however, one round struck the uniformed pant leg of an officer. The suspects, an 18-year-old Traverse City male and 17-year-old Traverse City male, were eventually apprehended and taken into custody.
The Michigan State Police executed a search warrant at a local hotel room that one teenager was located near outside when he was taken into custody. The weapon used in the shooting was recovered just outside the room. Firearm casings were also recovered at the scene of the shooting.
The 18-year-old is lodged at the Grand Traverse County Jail for larceny from an auto and resisting and obstructing. The 17-year-old is lodged at the same jail on charges of attempted homicide, larceny from an auto, and resisting and obstructing. The shelter-in-place advisory has been lifted, and there are no further public safety concerns from the incident, according to the TCPD.
The TCPD was assisted in the incident by the Michigan State Police, Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Fire Department, Grand Traverse County Central Dispatch, and Northwestern Michigan College Security.
