Two Former Pit Spitters Players Are Off To Major League Baseball
By Craig Manning | July 17, 2025
Two more Traverse City Pit Spitters alums are headed for the big leagues.
In a newsletter sent out to subscribers on Wednesday afternoon, the Pit Spitters organization reported that a pair former Pit Spitters had begun “their road to the show” during this week’s Major League Baseball draft. The players, Brendan Summerhill and Hayden Jatczak, both played as part of the Pit Spitters during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Summerhill was selected 41st overall in the first round of this year’s MLB draft, by the Tampa Bay Rays. That draft position makes Summerhill the second-highest draft pick in franchise history, according to the Pit Spitters. Summerhill, who played outfielder for Traverse City, tallied 20 hits and four doubles across his 27 games with the Pit Spitters. Summerhill heads to the MLB on the heels of a strong three-season run playing baseball for the University of Arizona.
Also off the big leagues is Jatczak, who signed with the San Francisco Giants as an undrafted free agent after the conclusion of this year’s draft. A 2020 graduate of Bay City Central High School, Jatczak put up strong statistics as a third baseman throughout his college playing career, which started at Saginaw Valley State and concluded with a transfer to Kent State University this past season. He is the reigning Mid-American Conference (MAC) Baseball Player of the Year.
According to the Pit Spitters newsletter, the organization has now sent 21 players to the MLB, including 16 draft picks.
