Volunteers Needed for County Debris Sites

Aug. 18, 2015

Grand Traverse County is seeking volunteers to assist with two county storm debris drop-off sites experiencing unusually high traffic volumes.

The sites - located at 7304 Skegemog Point Road (the Ashmore Gravel Pit) and 656 Rasho Road (the former East Bay Township Recycling property) - are seeing large loads of debris coming in at a steady pace, including up to 15 truckloads an hour at the Skegemog site. Hours of operation at both sites are 8am-7pm seven days a week until further notice. Volunteers are needed to to greet and direct those dropping off debris in an orderly manner. Food, water and shelter are provided at each site.

"Even if someone can volunteer for a few hours, every little bit helps," says Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery Manager Susan Shipman. Adds GT County Emergency Management Coordinator Gregg Bird: "These sites might be open for weeks, until all of the storm debris throughout our county has been cleaned up. State and local resources are allocated to the clean-up effort right now, so any help community members can provide will be greatly appreciated."

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. To volunteer, call 616-841-5399.
