City Manager to Take Medical Leave of Absence

By Beth Milligan | June 16, 2025

Traverse City Manager Liz Vogel will take a three-week medical leave of absence under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) starting June 18, with Vogel expected to return to work July 9.

Vogel notified city commissioners and staff about the departure in an email late Sunday and confirmed the leave to The Ticker Monday. "I want to share that, following the advice of my primary care physician, I will be taking a temporary leave of absence under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to focus on my health," she wrote in the email.

Vogel continued: "During my absence, Assistant City Manager Deb Allen will serve as Acting City Manager. Deb will oversee daily operations, lead staff meetings, manage financial approvals (AP/PO), and attend the July 7 city commission meeting. She will also coordinate closely with department heads, who will report directly to her during this period."

Vogel said she would attend a regular staff meeting Tuesday "to discuss any issues that might crop up and discuss potential agenda items that might (be) forthcoming in July." She concluded the email: "I appreciate your understanding and support during this time."

The FMLA provides eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year. Vogel told The Ticker she doesn't anticipate needing longer than the three weeks she has requested for leave.
