Fire Destroys Historic Barn At Groleau's Farm Market

Jan. 28, 2017

A fire in a large historic storage barn at Groleau's Farm Market early Friday morning closed Hammond Road for 90 minutes as firefighters responded to the scene.

The Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department was called to the property at the corner of Hammond and Four Mile roads at 1:45am. Fire crews first directed their hose streams to adjacent buildings to protect the exposures, then spent approximately 45 minutes getting the fire under control. Twenty-one firefighters used nearly 30,000 gallons of water from nearby hydrants to control the fire. Crews remained on the scene until 7:30am.

While no human lives were lost in the fire and no injuries were reported, some farm pigs did perish in the blaze. The barn had been in the Groleau family since the 1860s. The fire still remains under investigation, with the cause of the fire currently unknown.
