General Manager, Human Resources Director Both Out At Grand Traverse Resort

July 6, 2023

Matthew Bryant and Matthew McClellan, two high-up leaders at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, were terminated from their positions late last month, The Ticker has learned. Bryant had served as the Resort’s general manager since 2019, while McClellan was the property’s director of human resources. A memo was circulated to Resort employees notifying them of the staffing changes on Friday, July 23. Scott Chouinard, the Resort’s long-time vice president of finance and assistant general manager, has been named interim GM.

When asked why Bryant and McClellan were let go and what the plans are for finding their permanent replacements, Resort Communications Manager Caroline Rizzo tells The Ticker: “It is business as usual over here still and we will not be commenting further on internal staffing changes.”

Bryant came to the Resort in May 2019 after the departure of former GM Tim Norman, who had left the job late the previous year. At the time he took the Resort job, Bryant – whose career spans more than 30 years working in hotels and resorts – had most recently consulted on the opening of the Margaritaville Resort in Gatlinburg, where he led the hotel management team and oversaw the development of business and marketing plans. Bryant’s resume also includes GM positions for Radisson, Six Flags, and Marriott properties.

McClellan had been the Resort’s HR director since June 2012. Before that, he worked as the human resources director for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) from May 2008 to June 2012. GTB owns Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.
