Hannah Park Overlook Construction Starts Monday

By Beth Milligan | Jan. 11, 2025

Walton Contracting - working on behalf of the City of Traverse City - will start construction on a Hannah Park overlook project near the southwest corner of the South Union Street Bridge Monday, January 13. The project is expected to be completed March 26, weather permitting.

During construction, a lane shift will be in place for the southbound lane on Union Street. The sidewalk on the west side of Union Street will be closed between Sixth Street and State Street. Pedestrians will be detoured to cross at the Sixth Street crosswalk and the controlled crossing at the Union and State Street intersection. Access to the Post Office will be maintained. Appropriate signage and barricades will be in place in and around the work area, according to a city release.

Work activities will include "removing and salvaging sidewalks, selective demolition of fieldstone walls, adjustments to existing features, and installing new elements such as clay paver bricks, concrete sidewalks, fieldstone wall veneers, railings, and wall reinforcements," the release states. "These upgrades aim to enhance the overlook’s infrastructure, safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal."

The project is funded by the Old Town TIF ($105,000), Brown Bridge Trust ($12,000), City Parks Fund ($20,700), and Capital Improvement Fund ($68,000). City commissioners approved the contract with Walton Contracting in September.
