Fatal Long Lake Shooting Under Investigation

Oct. 17, 2016

The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate a fatal shooting Friday night in Long Lake Township.

Central Dispatch received a call at 10:34pm from a Jack's Trail residence indicating a 30-year-old man was dead in the home and a 23-year-old woman had been shot in the hand and face.

A preliminary investigation by the Sheriff's Office indicates the individuals involved in the shooting were a married couple, David and Ashley Peretiatko. The couple had been living on the West Coast and had two children, of whom they did not have custody. In early October, Ashley moved back to Traverse City alone to the Jack's Trail residence. Reports from the Las Vegas Police Department indicate that on or around October 11, David lured an individual to a hotel room and stabbed the victim, then stole the victim's car. Ashley's father was alerted by the LVPD that David may be making his way back across the country to Traverse City.

On Friday, a Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office Sergeant received an update from the FBI that David may be heading to the home where Ashley was residing. The FBI indicated they had reason to believe David was in northern Illinois at the time they contacted the Sheriff's Office. The Sergeant called Ashley's father to warn him David may be coming to the Jack's Trail residence. During the call, the father told the Sergeant that David was already at the residence and had been shot. Central Dispatch simultaneously received a call from Ashley's mother reporting the shooting.

Responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. Ashley Peretiatko was transported to Munson Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The Sheriff’s Office requested that the Michigan State Police Crime Lab process the scene.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the investigation is ongoing. The department has not yet released details about the actual shootings or how they occurred. "We are waiting for information from an autopsy, witness interviews, and crime lab results," the department said in a statement. "No arrests have been made at this time, and information will be released as it becomes appropriate."
