Sheriff's Office Seeking Tips in Boat Hit-and-Run

By Beth Milligan | Aug. 31, 2025

The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office is seeking public assistance in finding a suspect in a hit-and-run boat collision early Sunday morning.

According to authorities, a man was crossing West Grand Traverse Bay at 1:22 am in a 26-foot boat when it was struck by a pontoon boat traveling north. The pontoon had no lights on, struck the boat, and then continued north into West Grand Traverse Bay. The driver of the boat that was hit was unable to get a description of the pontoon but immediately called 911 and put on a life jacket.

Sheriff's Office deputies brought the victim to shore and towed his boat in safely. No injuries were reported. The Coast Guard provided assistance in searching the bay. According to the Sheriff's Office, the pontoon is likely to have damage to its left front side. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the pontoon to leave a message at the marine division non-emergency number at 231-922-2112 or email jking@gtsheriff.org.
