Snyder Declares State of Disaster in GT County

Aug. 11, 2015

Governor Rick Snyder declared a state of disaster in Grand Traverse County Monday. The declaration makes state resources available to help with recovery efforts following the region's devastating August 2 storm, and authorizes the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division to assist with coordination.

“Our state and local emergency response and volunteer services have been working to protect the health and safety of Michiganders and mitigate damage,” Snyder said in a written statement. “I commend these responders for their efforts in protecting our citizens during and after the storms. This disaster declaration will provide all available state assistance so our affected communities can continue their recovery.”

Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, deputy state director of emergency management and homeland security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD, said in a statement: "My staff has been actively working with our local emergency management partners in all counties affected by last week’s severe storms. I have directed my staff to work closely with Grand Traverse County so they can partner in these relief efforts."

Grand Traverse County has been operating under a local state of emergency since August 3. By requesting a governor's declaration, the county has "determined local resources are insufficient to address the situation and state assistance is required to protect the health, safety and property to lessen or avert the threat of a crisis," according to Snyder's office.
