TC Man Arrested for Possessing Meth, Fleeing Police

By Beth Milligan | Jan. 10, 2024

A Traverse City man was arrested for possessing meth and fleeing police during a recent traffic stop in Cadillac.

A trooper and cadet from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post stopped a vehicle on Granite Street near Laurel Street in Cadillac Thursday at 10pm. When the vehicle came to a stop, a man opened the passenger door and ran from the vehicle. A foot pursuit ensued. The man made it to a back yard fence on Granite Street. The trooper attempted to handcuff the man, but the suspect pulled his arms away and tucked them under his body. After a brief struggle, the man was secured and searched.

There was nothing found on the man, according to MSP. However, troopers found a rolled-up sock and glass pipe with residue that tested positive for methamphetamine in the immediate area of the struggle. The man, identified as 42-year-old James Ross Winrick from Traverse City, was wanted for parole violation. The driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old Traverse City woman, told troopers she saw Winrick tuck something into his shoe before he ran from the vehicle. The driver was not arrested and was allowed to leave.

Winrick was lodged in the Wexford County Jail. He was later arraigned in 84th District Court on one count of possession of methamphetamine (second or subsequent offense), two counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer, and being a habitual offender (fourth notice). His bond was set at $250,000 case surety. His next scheduled court appearance is on January 23 at 2pm.
