TSO Announces 2017-2018 Concert Season

By Beth Milligan | Aug. 17, 2017

The Traverse Symphony Orchestra will kick off its 65th anniversary season in September, which will feature a series of concerts highlighting special guest artists and the return of the Lunch with the Maestro Series.

The season begins on September 17 with a 65th Anniversary Concert presenting the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. Other notable repertoire in the season includes Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1, and Beethoven’s Second Symphony. In June 2018, TSO closes its season with two Rachmaninoff works never before performed by the TSO, the Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 1.

Soloists include the return of Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, debuting pianists Claire Huangci and John Novacek, world-renowned cellist Suren Bagratuni, and legendary pianist Ralph Votapek. The NMC Grand Traverse Chorale, Chamber Singers and Canticum Novum will join TSO to perform a Baroque Choral Festival, and the NMC Children’s Choir returns for the audience favorite Home for the Holidays concert.

"In this upcoming season, we will visit some standards we simply haven’t gotten around to, such as the Sibelius Violin Concerto, some incredible less often played works such as Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1 and some more recent pieces like Michael Daugherty’s Sunset Strip," says Maestro Kevin Rhodes. "There is truly something for everyone.”

TSO's Lunch with the Maestro Series will also return this season, offering patrons and community members the opportunity to visit with Rhodes and guest artists prior to upcoming performances. Luncheons will be held on select Thursdays prior to concerts at the Traverse City Golf and Country Club.
