US-31 Pedestrian Footbridge Struck By Truck

July 17, 2025

A commercial dump truck pulling a trailer loaded with an excavator hit the pedestrian footbridge over U.S. 31 near the Traverse City State Park earlier today (Thursday), according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office.

The collision caused a piece of debris to fall and strike a passenger car. No injuries were reported.

The dump truck was driven by a Lake Ann man, 47, who was driving west. The cause of the crash was tied to the excavator not being properly loaded, investigators say. The driver was ticketed.

MDOT is inspecting the footbridge, which has been at the center of controversy as state officials plan to remove it while many locals believe it should stay.
