By Beth Milligan | Feb. 21, 2025

A 29-year-old Kalkaska woman was killed and a 48-year-old Traverse City man was hospitalized following a crash on M-72 Thursday morning.

Responders from the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police were dispatched at 8:36am to the scene of the crash on M-72 just east of Bates Road in Acme Township. GT Metro Fire, Whitewater Township Fire Department, and MMR were also sent to the scene.

According to a crash investigation - which closed M-72 for five hours - the Kalkaska woman was traveling west on M-72 in a 2013 Chevy Equinox. She lost control of her vehicle as she slowed for other traffic ahead and entered the eastbound lane. She collided with an oncoming eastbound 2023 Ford F-150, which was being driven by the Traverse City man.

The woman was treated at the scene of the crash but pronounced dead from her injuries. The man was treated at the scene and then taken to Munson Medical Center. Speed and alcohol are not believed to have been contributing factors in the crash. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
