A man who was experiencing a mental health crisis and entered Grand Traverse Bay shortly after walking away from Munson Medical Center was rescued by authorities in the water.
According to a Michigan State Police release, troopers from the Traverse City Post initially responded to an incident on Voice Road in Kingsley, where the 54-year-old man was attempting to walk into traffic. Troopers "quickly established rapport with the man, who voluntarily agreed to be transported to Munson Medical Center for medical treatment," according to the release. "Shortly after the trooper’s departure, the man walked away from the hospital and was later observed walking toward the West End Beach, where he entered the cold waters in an apparent attempt to harm himself."
Officers from the Traverse City Police Department, Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, and Michigan State Police responded to the scene. Law enforcement officers and the Traverse City Fire Department offiicals deployed rescue boats and contacted the man. A Traverse City police officer engaged the man in conversation and persuaded him to board the boat. He was safely transported to shore and taken by ambulance to Munson Medical Center for continued medical care.
