Barney Road Construction, Closure Starts Monday

By Beth Milligan | Sept. 14, 2025

The Grand Traverse County Road Commission will start construction work on Barney Road Monday (September 15) - a project that will require a road closure that is expected to go through mid-October.

In a video posted to the Road Commission Facebook page, Manager Dan Watkins said three failed culverts on Barney Road will be replaced. That will require the closure of Barney between Gray Road and Cedar Run Road. "We know it's going to be a big inconvenience for everyone," Watkins said. To deal with traffic being detoured to Cedar Run Road, the Road Commission has installed a temporary traffic signal at the Cedar Run Road/Gray Road intersection that will be operational as of Monday morning. "Hopefully that helps everybody travel smoothly," Watkins said.

Barney Road is also set to be repaved as part of the construction project.
