Numerous restaurant and retail changes are underway across the region, with Beyond Juicery + Eatery and two new boutiques opening in Traverse City and several other businesses closing.

Openings
Beyond Juicery + Eatery, a Michigan-based franchise with dozens of locations across the Midwest, is coming to Traverse City. The company is moving into the former Dreoloco Taco space at 1201 East Front Street (unit A).

Beyond Juicery & Eatery promotes a healthy fast-casual menu including fresh made-to-order smoothies, raw juices, wraps, salads, and acai bowls. The company recently launched a breakfast menu with protein-forward scrambles and functional ingredients in its coffee and matcha drinks. Founded in 2005 in Birmingham, Michigan, Beyond Juicery & Eatery started franchising in 2018 (pictured, example store) and made headlines this summer when rapper Flo Rida joined as an equity partner. The company didn’t respond to inquiries on an opening date but said on its website the TC location is “coming soon.”

Two new boutiques are opening in Traverse City. Common Objects is a “colorful queer gift shop and quilt studio” located in the Front Row Centre building on Front Street, according to owner Cody Cook-Parrot. “The space will focus on artists and small brands as well as local Michigan artists,” says Cook-Parrot, who will run the shop with their girlfriend Katy Campbell. Inventory will include art books, candles, soaps, ceramics, gifts, and more. A grand opening is planned Saturday, October 24 from 5pm to 8pm, followed by operating hours of Thursday-Sunday 11am-5pm or by appointment at hello@commonobjects.space.

Dandelion Wishes Clothing Boutique, a resale and consignment shop, has launched at 748 Munson Avenue (#4) next to Great Clips in East Bay Plaza. The store features a mix of “new and pre-loved fashion” including clothing, shoes, accessories, hats, costumes, and more, according to its Facebook page. Posted hours are Monday-Saturday 11am-5pm.

Another Traverse City business could soon be making its return. Owner Nabiel Musleh of Zakey tells The Ticker he in the process of bringing his Middle Eastern restaurant back to the market, focusing on a smaller menu of wraps, hummus, fatoush, shawarma, falafel, curry chicken, lamb shank, palek panner, and grilled lamb chops. Musleh is in negotiations for a brick-and-mortar location now and says he hopes to share more details soon.

Closings
Multiple closures are on deck across the region. Art on Union, located at 523 South Union Street, recently posted the gallery is now permanently closed. “Thank you to the community and to all the artists for a wonderful year. Alas, life happens,” the business posted. Another arts-focused venture, Let’s Play Studio, recently closed at 531 West Front Street after opening earlier this summer. A post said that co-founder Laura Adams will be teaching art at a local school, while co-founder Miriam Pico will continue offering her Mindful and Musical classes at The Alluvion.

Several healthcare businesses have closed recently, including three HomeTown Pharmacy locations in Traverse City and the WellNow Urgent Care on US-31. On the food and beverage front, food truck Full Send Ramen recently ended operations at The Coin Slot, with the truck listed for sale. CuTea Boba has also closed both its Traverse City locations – on Cochlin Street and Division Street – with handwritten “closed” notes posted on the doors.

After recently launching a second location on Lake Avenue next to Hagerty, Bay Bread Company has announced it will close its original Randolph Street location at the end of the year. Owners Krystal and Scott Fluette were already preparing for a change due to the Randolph building being listed for sale, but are ending retail operations there sooner than initially planned. The duo acknowledged in a post that “it’s a lot for people who don’t like change,” but said Bay Bread will be “fully operational with all breads, sweets, sammies, coffees, and so much more” at the Lake Avenue location starting January 4. “This is the natural next step, as our lease is coming to an end on Randolph later in 2027,” they wrote.

Other moves…
Despite a seeming stall in construction activity at the former Macy’s site at the Grand Traverse Mall, development group Lormax Stern still owns the property and remains focused on its redevelopment. Owner Daniel Stern said by email the company is “hoping to announce the new tenant lineup in the coming months.” Lormax Stern previously said it planned to subdivide Macy’s into multiple tenant spaces featuring national brands, including a gourmet food store focused on “organic foods,” a national bookstore, an outdoor apparel retailer, and an “upscale” apparel store.

Treysian’s Treasures, a trading card game, video game, and collectibles shop, has moved to a new location at 821 South Garfield Avenue next to Pedego Electric Bikes. The store was previously located next to Sherwin-Williams on Garfield and is open at its new location Wednesday-Thursday 12pm-8pm and Friday-Sunday 12pm-10pm.

Finally, India Garden has added alcohol sales to its downtown Traverse City restaurant on State Street, serving up a variety of beer, wine, and cocktail options. The business was recently approved for a new liquor license by the city commission. Also related to alcohol, Silver Spruce Brewing Company has opened a new outdoor area at its Silver Lake Road location called Green Hill (pictured, bottom right). The spacious landscaped lawn features multiple shade structures and outdoor seating options.
