Grand Traverse Butterfly House & Bug Zoo Opens Today

Oct. 1, 2014

The G.T. Butterfly House & Bug Zoo will have its grand opening today (Wednesday) at 8840 E. M-72 in Williamsburg. The community education center will feature a walk-through garden exhibit with hundreds of butterflies, a Tarantula Tree featuring nine different tarantulas on display, a Honeybee Observation Hive, and attractions such as Duke Elsner's Crawl Space, featuring a preserved collection of insects donated by local expert Dr. Duke Elsner.

The organization's Fall Preview - running October 1-31 every day from 10am-6pm - will focus on the Monarch Butterfly. G.T. Butterfly House & Bug Zoo is working with a Michigan butterfly breeder who provides captive Monarchs, along with breeding other native Michigan butterflies for education and release. Starting in May 2015, the Zoo will open seasonally from May to October, allowing visitors to view up to 600 butterflies from around the world.
