By Beth Milligan | Nov. 28, 2023

A 35-year-old Bellaire man was arrested following a traffic stop on East Front Street after he was discovered with an open container and loaded guns and ammunition in his car.

A Michigan State Police tropper stopped Kevin James Stachnik at approximately 9:24pm Wednesday on East Front Street near Grandview Parkway in downtown Traverse City. Stachnik did not have his driver's license with him. There was also an odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle, according to an MSP release. The trooper noticed a water bottle in the center console and asked Stachnik what was inside it. Stachnik stated rum and Coke.

Further investigation revealed Stachnik was in possession of two loaded handguns and ammunition. He did not have a license to carry a concealed pistol. Stachnik was lodged in the Grand Traverse County Jail. He was arraigned this week in 86th District Court on one count of carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon. His bond was set at $10,000 10% cash surety. His next scheduled court appearance is on December 6.
