Multiple Assault Arrests Over Weekend

By Beth Milligan | Feb. 13, 2018

Four people were arrested in separate assault cases in Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties over the weekend.

In Grand Traverse County, Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the ParkShore Resort at 4:15am Sunday after a night supervisor heard yelling and screaming from a second-floor hallway and called 911. Shortly after the call was made, a woman arrived at the front desk with a fresh cut above her eye and asked for a bandage. Deputies reviewed hallway video of the hotel, which showed a man dragging the woman by her hair down the hallway and kicking her in the head and torso. The man fled the property before authorities arrived. Deputies gathered evidence and statements at the scene and turned over the investigation to the day shift. At 8:30am, a deputy located the man at his Paradise Township home and arrested him. The 19-year-old suspect was taken to Grand Traverse County Jail and faces felony aggravated assault charges. The victim was the man's 21-year-old girlfriend.

In Leelanau County, two men were arrested following a disturbance call in Bingham Township Saturday. At midnight, Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a reported disturbance on South Spyglass Ridge Drive. The reporting witness stated a vehicle was parked at the end of their driveway and multiple people were outside of the vehicle yelling. Upon arrival, deputies contacted four subjects, two men and two women.

An investigation determined all four subjects were arguing while traveling north on M-22 when the driver pulled onto South Spyglass Ridge Drive. The male driver exited the vehicle along with a female passenger, with both subjects arguing. The male driver then pushed the female, at which time a male passenger from the vehicle confronted the driver while holding a knife in his hand. The argument continued, but the female passenger was able to get the knife away from the male passenger.

The male passenger, a 19-year-old Suttons Bay man, was arrested on suspicion of felonious assault. The male driver, a 32-year-old Suttons Bay man, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Both suspects were lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

Also in Leelanau County, deputies arrested a man following a 911 hang-up call that led authorities to his home. The dispatch center received a 911 call just after midnight Sunday, with the dispatcher hearing the sound of screaming in the background before the call was cut short. Deputies went to the South French Road residence and interviewed the individuals there. According to authorities, a 34-year-old woman came to the residence to pick up two children and got into an argument with her 30-year-old husband. During the argument, the husband pushed the wife. She attempted to call 911, but the husband took the phone away from her. The two small children witnessed the altercation.

The husband, a Lake Leelanau man, was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault and interfering with telecommunications. He was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail. The victim complained of being sore, but did not request medical attention.
