New Executive Director Named For Centre Ice, Howe Arenas

By Beth Milligan | Oct. 31, 2018

The board of directors of Involved Citizens Enterprises (I.C.E.), which manages operations for Centre Ice and Howe arenas, has hired a new executive director.

Todd Spaulding will take the reins as the organization’s new leader following the retirement of current executive director Terry Marchand in spring 2019. It's the first leadership change in over 16 years at the arenas. Spaulding’s history with Centre Ice and Howe Arena dates back to 1991, when he first began coaching the Pee Wee house hockey team at Howe Arena. He continued coaching at various levels until 2014. In 2011, Spaulding was hired to fill dual roles as Office Manager for both I.C.E. and the Grand Traverse Hockey Association, positions he will continue to hold until the transition to director at the time of Marchand’s departure.

“I’m honored to be the next director of I.C.E. and of the rinks that have been such an important part of my life for many years,” says Spaulding. “I’m excited about the opportunity and look forward to working with all our user groups, business partners and the Traverse City community to continue the I.C.E. mission."

According to Scott Harvey, I.C.E. Board President, Marchand "has done an incredible job for the I.C.E. organization and has really helped to make Centre Ice one of the premier facilities in the Midwest. From managing Centre Ice and Howe Arena, to working with our user groups to help grow hockey, skating, and curling in our community exponentially during his tenure, to helping to make the Detroit Red Wings Training Camp and NHL Prospect Tournament so successful, he’s been an unbelievable asset to and leader of our organization."

Harvey added that the board of directors is excited for Marchand and his family "to be able to enjoy retirement and to be able to have Todd fill this role. Todd’s passion and dedication to the organization and our ice rinks is second-to-none. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will allow him to excel in this position, and Terry has done a great job in preparing him for assuming this role."

The nonprofit I.C.E. group owns and operates Centre Ice Arena and operates Howe Arena on behalf of user groups including the Grand Traverse Hockey Association, Traverse City Figure Skating Club, area high school hockey teams, adult hockey leagues, and the Traverse City Curling Club, as well as the Detroit Red Wings Training Camp and NHL Prospect Tournament.
