Two more northern Michigan events have been cancelled for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, including the Northwestern Michigan Fair and the Cherry Roubaix.
The Northwestern Michigan Fair board of directors announced on Facebook Friday they were cancelling the 2020 event, saying that with restrictions in place under Governor Gretchen Whitmer's executive orders, they found it "nearly impossible to continue planning the 2020 Northwestern Michigan Fair" for August 9-15."The fair is a summer event that generations of families and guests support each year and look forward to, but this was a necessary decision," the board wrote. "We hope to see all those people again next year for the 2021 Northwestern Michigan Fair" to be held August 7-14, 2021. Board members noted they will be working with the Northwest Michigan Livestock Council to provide a virtual fair and animal sale for the 4-H youth of the five-county area this summer.
Cherry Roubaix organizers also announced on Facebook Friday that their 2020 cycling event is cancelled. The event was slated to take place August 1. "We had honestly been trying to come up with a format that would allow us to still hold the event and to allow for appropriate social distancing rules," organizers wrote. "We even played around with the idea of a time trial-style event with assigned start times, but ultimately we were not able to obtain insurance for the event and not able to ensure the safety of our participants." Organizers said they would issue full refunds to any participants already registered, or else roll registration over to 2021 if preferred.
