Mary's Kitchen Port to Close This August

By Beth Milligan | March 29, 2025

Long-time Traverse City institution Mary's Kitchen Port is set to close its doors this summer, owners Mike Boudjalis and Kathy Baier have announced. The duo are planning to retire. Mary's Kitchen Port has been open for 44 years in business.

What originally started as a catering business by Mary Boudjalis-King has grown into a thriving deli and store on West Front Street, turning the Gobbler sandwich into a local icon. Boudjalis-King's children – Mike Boudjalis and Kathy Baier, who now run Mary's Kitchen Port - posted on the company's website that the business launch "seems like yesterday."

"Feels like 44 years," they continued. "We did catering, held cooking classes, sold some kitchen tools and of course lunch to go.  If baskets could talk, everyone would know that it wasn’t just lunch. Many times it was far more than that, and we are honored that you included us in so many of your important events. With a bit of sadness and some excitement we are letting you know on August 1, 2025, we are retiring and closing Mary’s Kitchen Port."

Boudjalis and Baier concluded the post: "Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your memories for over 44 years. We are grateful and humbled by your support. With appreciation, Mike, Kathy, and Mary (she’s always with us)." The store will reopen April 1 for its final season.
