Sewer Overflow Reported on LaFranier Road

By Beth Milligan | July 1, 2026

A sanitary sewer overflow was reported Wednesday on LaFranier Road between David Place and May Lane, according to the Grand Traverse County Department of Public Works, resulting in under 50 gallons of sewage being discharged.

According to DPW, the overflow was reported at 11:45am. Responding staff saw "approximately 10 gallons of sewage ponding on the grass shoulder at the west side of the road adjacent to a known sewer force main," DPS said in a release.

Staff rerouted the sewer pump station flow to an available gravity main, containing the spillage to less than 50 gallons, according to DPS. "The alternate sewer configuration does not currently impact any users of the system, and there are no use restrictions in place," the release states. "The alternate configuration will continue while excavation and repair of the force main occurs. No information is available at this time regarding extent and duration of the repair and associated lane closures, if any. The cause of the (overflow) is currently being investigated by the DPW and a local contractor."

The event was reported to the county health department and to the state, according to DPS. The spillage was "contained to land surface and did not enter any surface water drainages leading to Grand Traverse Bay," the release states.
