Attempted Murder Suspect Found Dead In Cell

By Beth Milligan | July 24, 2017

A Grawn man being held in the attempted murder of a Traverse City man died in his cell early Saturday morning at Grand Traverse County Jail.

According to the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office, 41-year-old Alan Bradley Halloway was found unresponsive in his jail cell shortly after midnight. Corrections officers began CPR, but Halloway was pronounced dead by EMS personnel. The cause of death is an apparent suicide.

The initial suicide response and investigation was handled by the Traverse City Police Department. The investigation has since been turned over to the Michigan State Police. The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office also plans to request outside assistance from the Michigan Sheriff's Association to investigate the incident at the county jail.

Halloway was facing potential life in prison on multiple felony charges - including attempted murder, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm possession - in connection to the shooting of David Loren Barber at Bay Hill Apartments Tuesday. After a confrontation over a woman, Halloway allegedly shot Barber in the shoulder with a Rugar .22 caliber pistol. Halloway also allegedly stabbed Barber in the arm during the attack, which was witnessed by three people at the apartment complex. Barber survived the attack and was released from Munson Medical Center this weekend.

Following the shooting, Halloway surrendered peacefully to hostage negotiators and told police he ingested 20 tablets of Valium. He was taken to Munson Medical Center for evaluation and cleared. He was initially on suicide watch at Grand Traverse County Jail, but was released from watch earlier this week.
